Campanula was our joy!

The plant Campanula alata motivated a group of enthusiasts to venture into the hillside of Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve and reach the small corner where this rare species still survives. A micro-habitat, with only a few metres in length, is all that remains of the population of this species in the area.

In the central region of Portugal, Campanula alata thrives in rocky outcrops and slopes well served with water runoff: a scarce microhabitat that is poorly represented in the landscape. Furthermore, this species has additional specific requirements. It does not like areas of high sun exposure or shade, requiring semi-shaded conditions. In addition, it succumbs to the advance of ecological succession, unable to overcome the development of the shrub and tree strata.
Its high sensitivity and very specific requirements make this plant a rare species, in sharp decline due to the loss and scarcity of its habitat, suffering severely from the expansion of eucalyptus plantations and biological invasions. It therefore has “Vulnerable” extinction status.

This plant flowers between late June and early July. The seeds ripen quickly and are dispersed by water and wind. Milvoz is implementing an ex-situ propagation programme for the species in order to promote the establishment of sub-nuclei in suitable locations near existing populations, in an attempt to make the species more resistant to regional extinction.

In an atmosphere of conviviality among the participants, this was yet another (of many) enjoyable moments at the Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve. More than an important conservation area, this place continues to bring people together, sharing knowledge and experiences, and promoting nature contemplation and environmental awareness.
May the Senhora da Alegria Bio-Reserve continue to leave its mark on citizens for many, many years to come, amid the discreet sprinkling oof Campanula alata's purple flowers!
